Deposits and housing scams
Housing scams target newcomers who are desperate for a home. Learn the warning signs and how a fair deposit works.
A fair deposit
A deposit (deposition) is security for the landlord, not advance rent. It should not exceed a couple of months’ rent, must be written in the contract, and is returned when you move out if nothing is damaged. Pay it by bank transfer so you have proof — never cash without a receipt.
