Rent increases and tenant rights
A landlord cannot raise your rent on their own. Rents for rental flats are negotiated, and the Rent Tribunal decides disputes.
Rent increases
- The landlord must tell you about an increase in writing.
- In most buildings the Tenants’ Association (Hyresgästföreningen) negotiates rents with the landlord.
- Index clauses that raise a rental flat’s rent automatically are not valid.
- If you do not accept an increase that has not been negotiated, the landlord can take it to the Rent Tribunal, which compares your rent with similar flats.
- Paying a higher rent notice can be taken as accepting it — read rent notices carefully, especially in January.
