Family, Children and Community

Spouse and children, parental leave, childcare and finding your people.

Arriving with a spouse or childrenRegister everyone, get the children into school or preschool, find their healthcare, and apply for child allowance.
Marriage and civil registrationA marriage from Pakistan is registered by showing Skatteverket the marriage certificate. Marrying in Sweden starts with a free impediment check.
Parental leave and child benefitsChild allowance is SEK 1,250 a month per child. Parental benefit gives 480 days per child — fewer if the child moves here after turning 1.
Preschool and childcare feesPreschool fees are capped nationally (maxtaxa) and depend on household income. From 1 July 2026 the cap for the first child is SEK 1,547 a month.
Finding friends and communitySwedes can seem reserved at first, but friendships grow through shared activities. And the Pakistani community is closer than you think.
Dealing with lonelinessThe dark months and distance from family make loneliness common among newcomers. You are not alone — and there is help.
Volunteering and sports clubsAssociations (föreningar) are the heart of Swedish social life. Joining one is the fastest way to belong.
