Education and Swedish Language

University life, SFI, Komvux, language cafés, schools and libraries.

Understanding Swedish educationFrom preschool to university: what is free, what is compulsory, and where adults study.
University registration, Ladok and student servicesRegistering is how you start your course — miss it and you can lose your place. Ladok holds your registrations and results.
Student cards, unions and nationsYour student ID gives transport and shop discounts. Student unions and, in Uppsala and Lund, nations are the centre of student social life — membership is voluntary.
SFI: Swedish for immigrantsSFI is the municipality’s free basic Swedish course for adults who live in Sweden. You do not need a personnummer to start.
Komvux: adult educationMunicipal adult education lets adults complete school subjects — useful for university eligibility or a new career.
Folkuniversitetet, language cafés and free resourcesBeyond SFI: evening courses, conversation groups at libraries and churches, and free apps — practice is what makes Swedish stick.
Recognising foreign qualificationsUHR compares your degree with Swedish education for free. Regulated professions need a licence from their own authority.
School and preschool for childrenChildren have a right to preschool from age 1 and must attend school from about 6. Apply through your municipality — school is free, preschool fees are capped.
LibrariesEvery municipality has a public library, and borrowing books and other media is free — including books in other languages and easy Swedish.
