Personal Number, ID and Government Registration

Personnummer, samordningsnummer, the Skatteverket ID card and your address.

Personal number

What is a personnummer? The Swedish personal identity number is the key to almost everything in Sweden — bank, BankID, healthcare, housing and salary. You get one when Skatteverket registers you as living in Sweden.
Who can get a personnummer? You are generally registered — and given a personnummer — if you will live in Sweden for at least one year. Non-EU citizens also need a valid Swedish residence permit.
Registering with Skatteverket, step by stepHow to notify Skatteverket that you have moved to Sweden: the e-service, the documents to upload, the in-person identity check, and what happens until you get your personnummer.
Booking and visiting a service centreYour personnummer, coordination number and ID card all need an in-person visit to a state service centre (Statens servicecenter). Here is how to book and what happens there.
While you wait for a decisionWhat you can already do while Skatteverket handles your registration — and what has to wait for the personnummer.
Registration delayed or refusedWhat to do if your personnummer is taking longer than expected, or if Skatteverket decides not to register you.

Coordination number

What is a samordningsnummer?A coordination number is an identity number for people who are not registered as living in Sweden — for example if you stay less than a year but work, study or pay tax here.
Personnummer vs samordningsnummerThe two Swedish identity numbers side by side: who gets which, how they look, and what each one lets you do.

ID card

Applying for the Skatteverket ID cardThe Skatteverket ID card is the Swedish identity card for people registered here. Banks, pharmacies and post offices accept it as ID. You pay SEK 400 first, then visit a service centre.
After you receive your ID cardYour ID card unlocks the next steps: bank account, BankID and Swish. Here is the order to do them in, and how to look after the card.

Registration

Updating your registered addressWhen you move within Sweden, tell Skatteverket within a week. It is free and takes a few minutes with BankID.
Ordering a personbevisA personbevis is an extract from the population register — proof of your registered details, family or marriage for authorities, embassies and employers.
Other essential government servicesThe authorities you will deal with most, what each one does, and the yearly tax return every taxpayer files in spring.
