Employment, Taxes and Workers’ Rights

Finding work, contracts, salary and tax, unions, a-kassa and your permit.

Getting a job

Finding a jobWhere jobs are advertised, how hiring works in Sweden, and why your network matters as much as your CV.
CVs and cover lettersSwedish CVs are short, factual and tailored. The cover letter (personligt brev) explains why you fit this job.
Swedish job interviewsInterviews are relaxed but structured. Be on time, be honest, give examples, and expect questions about teamwork.
Recognising qualifications from PakistanUHR compares your Pakistani degree with Swedish education for free. Regulated professions like doctors and teachers need a licence from their own authority.

At work

Employment contractsKnow what kind of employment you have, what your salary and hours are, whether a collective agreement applies, and the notice period.
Gross vs net salary and taxesSwedish salaries are quoted before tax. Your employer deducts tax every month using your municipality’s tax table; high earners also pay state tax.
Reading your payslipThe Swedish words on a payslip (lönespecifikation) and what to check every month.
Working hours, overtime and holidayBy law: 40 hours a week, limited overtime, at least 11 hours’ rest a day, and 25 days of holiday a year. Collective agreements often give more.
Collective agreements and unionsMuch of Swedish working life is regulated by collective agreements between unions and employers. Joining a union is voluntary — and often worth it.
A-kassa (unemployment insurance)Joining an unemployment fund (a-kassa) gives you income-related benefit if you lose your job. Join early — the conditions depend on membership and work history.
PensionsYour Swedish pension is built from the national public pension plus, if your employer has one, an occupational pension. Check both on your annual statement.
Swedish workplace cultureFlat hierarchies, consensus, punctuality, fika and a firm line between work and private time.

Permits and business

Your residence permit and work rightsWork permits are tied to an employer and occupation; study permits now limit work to 15 hours a week during semesters; family permits usually allow work. Know your own conditions.
Changing jobs on a work permitChanging employer or occupation usually means applying for a new work permit — before your current one expires.
Side jobs and extra incomeAll income in Sweden is taxed — a second job, gig work or selling services. Check your permit allows it, and declare everything.
Starting an enskild firmaA sole proprietorship is the simplest way to run a small business — sewing, henna, tutoring, cleaning. Registering for F-tax is free and done on verksamt.se.
