Driving Licences and Professional Driving

Every Swedish licence category, step by step, with verified fees.

Start here

All Swedish licence categoriesEvery Swedish driving licence category on one page: what it lets you drive, the minimum age, what you need first, and the professional qualifications on top.
Can I drive in Sweden with my Pakistani driving licence?Yes, for a limited time: a valid Pakistani licence works until you have been registered in Sweden for one year. It cannot be exchanged, so to keep driving you need a Swedish licence.
Learner’s permit (körkortstillstånd)Every licence starts with a learner’s permit from Transportstyrelsen. It is free, takes up to about four weeks, and lasts five years.

Car

Category B: car driving licence, step by stepThe complete path to a Swedish car licence: learner’s permit, eye test, practice, Risk 1 and Risk 2, the theory test and the driving test — in the right order, with the official fees and realistic total costs.
Risk 1 and Risk 2 (riskutbildning)The two compulsory risk courses for car and motorcycle licences: what each covers, when to take them and how long they are valid.
Private practice and supervisorsPractising with a family member or friend saves a lot of money. Since 1 August 2026 no introduction course is needed — but your supervisor must be approved.
B96 and BE: car with a heavier trailerB covers most car-and-trailer combinations up to 3,500 kg. For heavier combinations you need B96 (up to 4,250 kg) or BE.

Moped and motorcycle

AM: moped class I licenceThe AM licence lets you ride an EU moped (class I). It needs a compulsory AM course and a theory test — there is no driving test.
A1: light motorcycle licenceA1 covers light motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW, from age 16. Motorcycle risk course, theory test and a full-day driving test.
A2: medium motorcycle licenceA2 covers motorcycles up to 35 kW from age 18, and after two years it is a shortcut to the full A licence at 20.
A: heavy motorcycle licenceThe full motorcycle licence: from 24, or from 20 if you have held A2 for two years.

Truck and bus

C1 and C1E: medium truck licenceC1 lets you drive trucks up to 7,500 kg from age 18; C1E adds a trailer, up to 12,000 kg in total.
C and CE: heavy truck licenceC covers any truck over 3,500 kg; CE adds trailers of any weight. Minimum age 21 (lower with YKB basic training).
D1 and D1E: minibus licenceD1 lets you drive buses for up to 16 passengers and up to 8 m long; D1E adds a trailer. Minimum age 21.
D and DE: bus licenceD covers buses of any size; DE adds trailers. Minimum age 24, lower with YKB basic training.

Professional

YKB: professional driver competenceTo carry goods by truck or passengers by bus professionally you need a YKB certificate on top of your C or D licence: basic training and a test, then 35 hours of further training every five years.
Taxi driver licence (taxiförarlegitimation)To drive a taxi you need a taxi driver licence from Transportstyrelsen: be 20 or older, have held a car licence for two years, pass two theory modules and a taxi driving test at Trafikverket, and pass medical and conduct checks.
Driving and rest times, tachographsProfessional truck and bus drivers must follow EU driving and rest time rules and record them with a tachograph.
Tractor and other vehiclesA tractor licence is only needed if you have no other licence — a car licence already covers tractors.
