Before you start
Make sure you qualify for registration: you plan to live in Sweden for at least a year and, as a non-EU citizen, you hold a valid Swedish residence permit. You also need an address where you really live.
What you need
Documents for each person moving
0 of 6 done- Upload copies of all pages that contain information. Bring the original to the identity check.
- If you have one. Bring the original.
- For example the residence permit decision, an employment contract or an enrolment certificate.
- The four-digit number shown on your door, mailbox or rental contract.
- If it applies to youIf you are or have been married — for example a marriage certificate, divorce decree or family registration document.
- If it applies to youFor each child under 18, plus any custody decision.
Step by step
Log in to the “Moving to Sweden” e-service
The e-service is called Flytta till Sverige and is available in English. Log in with an e-ID. If you do not have a Swedish e-ID yet, Skatteverket says you can download the Freja app and log in with it. A service centre can help you log in or install the app.
Fill in one notification per person
Every person moving — including each child under 18 — needs a separate notification. You can submit it at the earliest 14 days before you move. Enter your home address exactly, with the apartment number.
Upload your documents
Upload your passport (all pages with information) and your residence permit card, plus the documents in the list above.
Submit and save the receipt
A receipt appears on screen. Take a photo of it. It contains a link to book the identity check.
Book the identity check
Book one appointment for everyone in the family who is moving, through the link on the receipt or Statens servicecenter’s booking page. Read what happens at the visit.
Visit the service centre after you arrive
Go as soon as you can after arriving, with your appointment confirmation and the original passport and residence permit card for every person. The documents are checked and returned straight away.
Wait for the decision letter
Cases are handled in the order received. It takes about 5 weeks before an administrator is assigned. The decision comes by post. See while you wait.
After you are registered
When you are listed for the first time you are assigned a personnummer, and your name, address, date of birth and civil status are recorded. Next steps:
- Apply for the Skatteverket ID card
- Open a bank account and get BankID
- Give the number to your employer or university
Once registered you may owe Swedish tax on income from abroad — contact Skatteverket if you have foreign income.
Common mistakes
- One notification for the whole family. Every person needs their own.
- Uploading only the photo page of the passport. Upload every page with information.
- A c/o address or an address you do not live at. It cannot be registered.
- Missing apartment number.
- No name on the mailbox, so the decision letter never arrives.
- Moving again without telling Skatteverket while the case is open.
- Forgetting originals at the identity check.
