Applying for the Skatteverket ID card
The Skatteverket ID card is the Swedish identity card for people registered here. Banks, pharmacies and post offices accept it as ID. You pay SEK 400 first, then visit a service centre.

Overview
Your passport is valid ID, but many Swedish services — banks especially — prefer or require a Swedish ID document. For most newcomers that is the Skatteverket ID card (id-kort). Swedish citizens apply for a national ID card from the police instead.

Proving your identity
Skatteverket accepts a fixed list of documents. For most Pakistani newcomers the important one is a valid Swedish residence permit, which Skatteverket checks with Migrationsverket. A Pakistani passport on its own is not on the list of approved documents.
Other approved documents include a valid Swedish passport, Swedish police national ID card, Swedish driving licence, an EU passport or EU national ID card that meets the EU security rules, and certain SIS-certified Swedish ID cards.

What happens at the appointment
An administrator checks your identity documents and proof of payment, takes your photo and measures your height. Do not bring a photo. Dark glasses, headwear or other accessories are only allowed for religious or medical reasons — a hijab worn for religious reasons is fine.

After applying
Processing usually takes about two weeks, longer if Skatteverket needs more information. A separate letter with e-ID codes for the card arrives by post — do not bring it when you collect the card. If you have not heard anything, or missed the two-month collection window, call 0771-567 567.
If your application is refused, the letter explains how to appeal to the Administrative Court in Stockholm.
Common mistakes
- Booking an office that does not issue ID cards.
- Paying at the office — it is not possible; pay beforehand.
- Forgetting the personnummer in the payment message.
- Bringing only a Pakistani passport — bring your residence permit card.
- Not collecting within two months.
- Moving without updating your address, so the “card ready” letter goes astray.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply with a coordination number?
No. You must be registered in Sweden with a personnummer.
Is the ID card the same as BankID?
No. The card is a physical ID document. It also has an electronic ID that works with a card reader, but most people use BankID from their bank for logging in.
Can someone else pay for me?
Yes. They write your personnummer in the message or OCR field.
