Registration delayed or refused
What to do if your personnummer is taking longer than expected, or if Skatteverket decides not to register you.
If it is taking longer than expected
Compare with the published times
Check Skatteverket’s processing times. The time is until an administrator is assigned, not until the decision.
Check your mailbox and email
Skatteverket may have asked for more information. Make sure your name is on the mailbox.
Check that you did the identity check
The case cannot be finished until every person has visited a service centre.
Contact Skatteverket
Call the tax information service on 0771-567 567 (+46 8 564 851 60 from abroad), weekdays 8.00–16.00, or visit a service centre. Have your notification receipt ready.
If you are not registered
The decision letter explains the reason and how to appeal, including the deadline. Read it carefully — and if you do not understand Swedish, ask Skatteverket or a friend to explain it, or use an interpreter.
Common reasons include a residence permit that does not cover at least a year, an address you cannot show you live at, or missing documents. If the problem can be fixed (for example a new permit), you can notify your move again.
