Personal number & ID
Who can get a personnummer?
You are generally registered — and given a personnummer — if you will live in Sweden for at least one year. Non-EU citizens also need a valid Swedish residence permit.
At a glance
- Staying 1 year or more
- Notify your move → usually registered
- Staying less than 1 year
- Not registered → coordination number if needed
- Non-EU citizens
- Need a valid Swedish residence permit
The one-year rule
If you move to Sweden and plan to live here for one year or more, you are generally required to be registered in the Swedish Population Register. Skatteverket decides whether you meet the requirements.
If you plan to stay less than one year, you should not be registered. If you need an identity number for work, tax or a bank, you may get a coordination number (samordningsnummer) instead.
