Personal number & ID
What is a samordningsnummer?
A coordination number is an identity number for people who are not registered as living in Sweden — for example if you stay less than a year but work, study or pay tax here.

What it is
A samordningsnummer looks like a personnummer — 10 digits — but 60 is added to the day of birth. Someone born on 3 October 1970 could have the number 701063-XXXX. That makes it easy to tell the two apart.
It is given to people who have never been registered in the Swedish Population Register. It lets authorities, employers and universities identify you, but it is not a registration as a resident.
Who can get one
| Route | When it applies |
|---|---|
| You apply yourself | You plan to stay less than one year, have a connection to Sweden and can show you need the number. |
| An authority, university or college requests it | For example your university for an exchange semester. The notice goes to the contact address they gave. |
| You apply for F-tax approval | A number is assigned as part of that application. |
| Children | Parents or guardians apply jointly if the child has a connection to Sweden. |
How to apply
Apply online or on paper
Use Skatteverket’s “Coordination number” e-service (in English) or form SKV 7540. Give a contact address where you can receive post.
Book an identity check
You must visit a service centre in person, and you must book — even if an authority requested the number for you. Book on Statens servicecenter’s page.
Bring your documents
Your passport or national ID card, and your Swedish residence permit card if you have one. They are checked and returned immediately.
Wait for the notice
For an individual application it can take up to about 5 weeks before an administrator is assigned.
Good to know
- An active number stays active for five years, then becomes inactive automatically if it is not used. Reactivation needs an e-service request and a new identity check.
- Numbers are marked with an identity level: confirmed, probable or uncertain.
- Working here for less than a year? You also need preliminary A-tax or SINK registration for your salary — a separate process. Your employer can apply for SINK for you.
- Changing only your contact address does not need an identity check.
