What a vårdcentral is
A vårdcentral (also called hälsocentral or familjeläkarmottagning in some regions) is a primary care clinic with doctors, nurses and often psychologists and physiotherapists. It is where you go first for most health problems, prescriptions, referrals to specialists and sick-leave certificates. Both public (regional) and private centres take part — they cost the same for patients.
Why choose one
You can visit any vårdcentral, but being listed (listad) at one means it is responsible for your care, keeps your history and gives you a permanent contact. Healthcare is run by Sweden’s 21 regions. Fees, opening hours and some rules differ between regions — always check the 1177 page for your region. In several regions you are automatically listed at a centre near your registered address if you do not choose.
