Visit fees
Each region sets its own fees for a nurse, doctor or emergency visit. Healthcare is run by Sweden’s 21 regions. Fees, opening hours and some rules differ between regions — always check the 1177 page for your region. The rules below apply to people who are registered in Sweden or have equivalent rights.
High-cost protection (högkostnadsskydd)
| Healthcare visits | Prescription medicines | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum per 12 months | SEK 1,450 (a region may set lower) | SEK 3,800 |
| Period starts | At your first paid visit | At your first purchase |
| After the cap | A free card (*frikort*) — no more visit fees for the rest of the period | Free covered medicines for the rest of the period |
| Children | Region rules apply | Covered medicines are free under 18 |
Example
Your first paid visit is on 25 April. By 10 October your fees reach the cap. From then until 24 April the following year you pay no visit fees. Keep your receipts if the clinic does not register payments electronically — logging in to 1177 often shows how much is left.
