Pharmacies and prescriptions
Prescriptions are electronic and linked to your personnummer. Here is how to collect medicines and what they cost.
How it works
- Prescriptions are sent electronically. At any pharmacy (apotek) you show ID and they find them on your personnummer.
- Someone else can collect for you with your ID and theirs, or with a power of attorney.
- Some simple medicines (painkillers, allergy tablets) are sold without prescription, and some also in supermarkets.
- From a country outside the EEA, such as Pakistan, you may bring up to three months’ supply of medicine for your own use. Be ready to show it is yours — a pharmacy label with your name or a doctor’s certificate.
- Narcotic-classed medicines (some sleeping pills, painkillers and ADHD medicines) have much tighter limits: five days’ supply (list II–III) or three weeks’ supply (list IV–V) if you live in Sweden. Check the classification in Läkemedelsfakta or ask a pharmacy.
Covered prescription medicines count towards the SEK 3,800 yearly cap. Children under 18 pay nothing for covered medicines.
