Banking & BankID
Swedish banks explained
The main banks, how they differ for a newcomer, and what to compare before choosing.
The main banks that issue BankID
Sweden’s large banks — Handelsbanken, SEB, Swedbank and Nordea — have branches in most cities. Danske Bank, Länsförsäkringar Bank, Skandiabanken, ICA Banken and the savings banks (sparbanker) also issue BankID. BankID keeps a list of the banks that issue it.
Online-only banks can be cheap, but they usually need a Swedish ID to open an account digitally, so they suit you better once you have an ID card.
