Using your account and debit card
Clearing and account numbers, debit cards, card-only shops and what to give your employer.
Your account numbers
| Number | What it is | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Clearing number | 4–5 digits identifying your bank and branch | Salary, Försäkringskassan, CSN, transfers inside Sweden |
| Account number | Your own account, given together with the clearing number | Same as above |
| IBAN and BIC | International account format starting with SE | Money sent from abroad, e.g. from Pakistan |
Paying by card
Many shops, buses and cafés in Sweden are card-only and some do not take cash at all. Your debit card (bankkort) works in shops, online and at ATMs. Contactless payment and mobile wallets are widely accepted. Keep a little cash for the occasional place that needs it.
