Swedish workplace culture
Flat hierarchies, consensus, punctuality, fika and a firm line between work and private time.
What to expect
- Flat hierarchy: first names for everyone, including the boss. Your opinion is expected in meetings.
- Consensus: decisions can take time because people want everyone on board.
- Punctuality: meetings start on time.
- Fika: coffee breaks together are part of the job — join them, it is how relationships are built.
- Balance: working late is not admired; leaving to pick up children is normal.
- Directness with politeness: feedback is factual and calm. Raising your voice is rare.
- Religion: many employers accommodate prayer times and dietary needs when asked — talk to your manager.
