A-kassa (unemployment insurance)
Joining an unemployment fund (a-kassa) gives you income-related benefit if you lose your job. Join early — the conditions depend on membership and work history.
How it works
- Unemployment funds are private associations supervised by IAF (the Swedish Unemployment Insurance Board). Each covers certain sectors.
- You pay a monthly fee. Benefit levels and qualifying conditions depend on your work history and how long you have been a member — check your fund’s current rules.
- To receive benefit you must be registered as a jobseeker with Arbetsförmedlingen.
- Your right to remain in Sweden after losing a job depends on your permit, not on a-kassa — see permit and work rights.
