Fika and social life
Fika — a coffee or tea break with something sweet — is how Swedes connect. Saying yes is the easiest way into a group.
How fika works
- At work, fika is often at set times. Join — tea or water is perfectly fine.
- Being invited for fika is a friendly first step; you do not need to bring anything.
- At a dinner invitation, bring a small gift and arrive on time.
- Many social events include alcohol. Saying “no thanks” is completely accepted — ask for a non-alcoholic drink.
- Tell hosts if you eat halal or no pork; most will happily adapt.
