Getting around
Understanding Swedish public transport
Each region runs its own buses, trams and local trains, with its own app and prices. Here is how zones, tickets, validation and inspections work — and what it costs in your city.
At a glance
- Who runs it
- Your region — SL, UL, Västtrafik, Skånetrafiken…
- Buy tickets
- In the operator’s app, at machines, or by tapping a bank card in some cities
- Without a ticket
- A surcharge, typically SEK 1,500 for adults
How it works
- Regional operators. Each county has one public transport authority. Tickets from one region are usually not valid in another, though combined tickets exist (for example UL + SL).
- Zones. Some regions price by zone (Västtrafik: A, B, C; Skånetrafiken: zones of different sizes). Others have one price for the whole area.
- Time-based tickets. A single ticket is valid for a set time — for example 75 minutes in Stockholm and Uppsala, 90 minutes with Västtrafik — and you can change as often as you like within it.
- Period tickets. 24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or a year. They pay off if you travel most days.

Validating your ticket
A ticket in the app must be activated before you board. On a travel card or bank card you tap (blippa) the reader when you get on or at the gates. Have your ticket and any discount proof (student ID) ready to show.
