Getting around
Cycling rules and safety
The traffic rules cyclists must follow in Sweden, required lights and reflectors, helmets, and cycling in winter.
The rules
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Helmet | Required for everyone under 15, also when riding as a passenger. Adults are not required but are strongly advised to wear one. |
| Lights in the dark | A white or yellow front light and a red rear light, plus reflectors at the back, front and sides. |
| Where to ride | Use the cycle path. From age 15 you may use the road even if there is a cycle path, if the limit is at most 50 km/h and you are careful. |
| Children up to 8 | May ride on the pavement when there is no cycle path. |
| Signals | Follow traffic lights for cyclists and give way where signs or road markings say so. |
