Everyday laws newcomers may not know
A few Swedish rules that often surprise people from Pakistan — about children, alcohol, smoking and more.
Good to know
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Children may not be hit | All physical punishment of children is illegal, including by parents. |
| Helmets for children under 15 | Required when cycling or riding as a passenger. |
| Alcohol | Wine, spirits and strong beer are sold in shops only by Systembolaget, the state-owned chain, and only to people aged 20 and over. Light beer (folköl, at most 3.5%) has an 18 age limit. |
| Smoking | Banned — including e-cigarettes — at public-transport stops and platforms, outdoor serving areas, playgrounds, fenced sports grounds and entrances to places the public can enter. |
| Pets and animals | Dogs must be kept under control; animal welfare rules are strict. |
| Using BankID for someone else | Never lend your BankID — you are responsible for what is signed. |
| Undeclared work | Working “black” is illegal and leaves you without insurance or pension. |
