Public transport and travel cards
Each region runs its own buses, trams and trains — and its own app and travel card.
- How long it takes
- Your first day
- What it costs
- Single tickets and 30-day passes; prices vary by region
Public transport in Sweden is run by region, so the operator, app and card depend on where you live:
- Stockholm: SL (sl.se)
- Gothenburg and Västra Götaland: Västtrafik (vasttrafik.se)
- Malmö, Lund and Skåne: Skånetrafiken (skanetrafiken.se)
- Uppsala: UL (ul.se)
- Trains between cities: SJ and other train companies; Resrobot plans journeys across Sweden.
How to pay
- Download your region's app and buy tickets in it — the easiest way on your first day.
- For daily travel, a 30-day pass is usually cheapest. Most regions load it on a travel card or in the app.
- Many regions also let you tap a contactless bank card at the barrier or on the bus.
- Students and young people often get a discount — check the rules for your region.
You cannot usually buy tickets from the bus driver with cash. Always have a valid ticket before you board — inspectors give fines.
Members in your city can tell you which ticket suits your commute — just ask.
